Ride sharing and privacy: what a carpool app really needs to know
Which personal details a carpool actually requires, which ones apps ask for anyway, and how LinqRoad keeps the list short.
By the LinqRoad team · Updated
The minimum a carpool needs
Strip a carpool down and it's simple: two people going the same way at the same time agree a price and a meeting point. Everything else is optional.
What many apps collect anyway
- Email addresses and phone numbers tied to a permanent profile
- Government ID scans and selfies
- Payment cards and full transaction history
- Continuous GPS location, even between trips
- Advertising IDs shared with third-party trackers
How LinqRoad keeps it short
LinqRoad has no accounts and no in-app payments, so there's no profile to fill in and no card on file. Drivers publish a name, phone number and trip details on the listing. We record technical information (IP address, approximate IP-based location, device and browser type, and a random device ID cookie) with rides and searches for safety and to prevent abuse. We don't run advertising or analytics trackers, and we never sell data.
