Frequently asked questions
Everything about finding and offering rides on LinqRoad, plus the local rules in each country.
General
What is LinqRoad?
LinqRoad is a carpool matching website. It connects drivers who have empty seats with riders going the same way, so they can share the trip and split the cost. It works worldwide, with prices in the local currency and times in the local time zone, and has detailed local guides for India, the United States, the United Kingdom (including all of London) and Canada.
Is LinqRoad free?
Yes. Searching for rides and posting a ride are free, and LinqRoad takes no commission. Riders pay the driver directly the price per seat the driver set.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, password or profile. To post a ride you enter the trip details plus a name and phone number that riders can use to contact you.
What information does LinqRoad collect?
We never ask for your email, ID documents, payment card or home address, and we don't use advertising or analytics trackers. When you post a ride, the details you enter (name, phone, route, time, vehicle, price) are shown publicly. For safety and to stop abuse, we also record technical information with rides and searches: IP address, approximate location based on that IP, device and browser type, and a random device ID cookie. We never sell data. See the privacy page for details.
How does ride search work?
Type your pickup and drop and choose a suggested place. LinqRoad shows upcoming rides that start within about 25 km of your pickup and end within about 25 km of your drop. You can also filter by date, vehicle (car or bike), smoking, music and AC.
How do I pay for a ride?
Directly to the driver, at a price agreed before the trip, for example in cash or by UPI, Interac e-Transfer, bank transfer or a payment app. LinqRoad doesn't handle money.
Can I offer seats on a bike?
Yes. Choose Bike when you post a ride; bike rides have one passenger seat. Riders can filter search results to show only cars or only bikes.
Is carpooling with LinqRoad safe?
Most shared rides go smoothly, but you're travelling with someone new. Meet in a public place, share the trip details with a friend, check the vehicle matches the listing, and agree the price before you set off. Our safety guide has a full checklist.
How long does a ride stay listed?
Until its departure time. After that, rides stop appearing in search automatically, so the listings you see are always upcoming trips.
Carpooling in India
Is carpooling allowed in India?
Sharing a ride and splitting fuel and toll costs in a private car is common across India. Carrying passengers for profit in a private (white-plate) vehicle can require a commercial permit, and some states have their own rules, so keep it to cost-sharing and check the rules in your state.
How do riders pay the driver in India?
Directly, usually in cash or by UPI, at an amount agreed before the trip. LinqRoad doesn't process payments and takes no commission.
Can I find bike pooling on LinqRoad?
Yes. Drivers can list a bike with one passenger seat, and riders can set the Vehicle filter to Bike to see only two-wheeler rides.
Which Indian cities does LinqRoad cover?

Carpooling in the USA
Is it legal to share gas money for a carpool in the US?
In most of the US, splitting gas and toll costs for a shared trip is treated as ordinary carpooling. Charging more than your costs can make it a commercial ride with different insurance and licensing requirements, which vary by state, so check with your insurer if you're unsure.
Can a LinqRoad carpool use HOV lanes?
Usually, if you meet the occupancy rule. Many HOV lanes need 2 or more people and some need 3 or more. Hours vary, and some express lanes also need a toll transponder, so follow the posted signs.
How do riders pay the driver?
Directly, in cash or with any payment app you both agree on, at a price set before the trip. LinqRoad doesn't take payments or commission.
Can I find long-distance rides like New York to Boston?
Yes. Search with your pickup and drop, for example New York to Boston, Los Angeles to San Diego or Seattle to Portland, to see rides heading that way.
What currency and units does LinqRoad use in the US?
Prices are in US dollars (USD) per seat. Our US city guides show distances in miles, and departure times are shown in the ride's local time zone.
Do I need an account to use LinqRoad?
No. You can search for rides and post a ride without signing up, creating a password or building a profile. Drivers only publish the details riders need: a name, a phone number, the route, the time and the price per seat.

Car sharing in London and the UK
Is car sharing legal in the UK if passengers pay?
Yes, as long as the driver only covers costs. Passengers paying a fair share of fuel is generally fine; charging more than your costs can count as "hire and reward", which needs a licence and different insurance. Many insurers confirm cost-sharing doesn't affect cover, but check your own policy.
Does car sharing get me out of ULEZ or the Congestion Charge?
No. Both are charged per vehicle, not per passenger, but splitting the trip between several people reduces each person's share. ULEZ covers all London boroughs; check TfL for current charges and exemptions.
Where can I find lift shares in London?
Anywhere in Greater London: pickup and drop search works for any address. Common pickup points include King's Cross St Pancras, Victoria Coach Station, Heathrow, Canary Wharf and Stratford.
What are the most popular car share routes from London?
London to Oxford, Cambridge, Brighton, Reading, Milton Keynes, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester are among the most popular. Search your exact pickup and drop to see who is going your way.
What currency are prices shown in?
Rides posted in the UK show the price per seat in pounds sterling (£ GBP), with departure times in UK time.
Do I need an account to use LinqRoad?
No. You can search for rides and post a ride without signing up, creating a password or building a profile. Drivers only publish the details riders need: a name, a phone number, the route, the time and the price per seat.
