Carpooling in India: a practical guide for commutes and intercity trips

How to find a carpool in India, popular routes like Mumbai–Pune and Delhi–Jaipur, paying by UPI, bike pooling and staying within the rules.

Where carpooling works best in India

  • IT corridors: Hinjewadi (Pune), HITEC City (Hyderabad), Electronic City and Outer Ring Road (Bengaluru), OMR (Chennai), Cyber City (Gurugram)
  • NCR commutes between Delhi, Gurugram and Noida
  • Intercity weekend routes: Mumbai–Pune, Delhi–Jaipur, Delhi–Chandigarh, Bengaluru–Mysuru, Chennai–Puducherry
  • Airport runs to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports

How to find a ride

Open LinqRoad, type your pickup (for example "Hinjewadi Phase 1") and drop ("Andheri East"), and pick a suggested place. You'll see upcoming rides that start and end within about 25 km of those points, with the price per seat in rupees and the departure time in IST.

Use the filters to narrow it down: car or bike, AC or no AC, and whether smoking and music are allowed.

Staying within the rules

Sharing a ride and splitting fuel and tolls is common practice. Carrying paying passengers for profit in a private vehicle is treated differently and can need a commercial permit, and some states have their own rules on carpooling. Keep prices close to your actual costs and check the rules in your state.

Paying and pricing

  • Work out a fair price per seat with our fuel-split formula: fuel plus tolls, divided by everyone in the car.
  • Agree on cash or UPI before the trip.
  • Say whether the price includes tolls. Expressway tolls add up on routes like Mumbai–Pune.

Frequently asked questions

Is carpooling legal in India?

Sharing rides and splitting costs is widely practised. Carrying passengers for profit in a private (white-plate) vehicle can require a commercial permit, and rules differ between states, so keep to cost-sharing and check your state's rules.

How much should a Mumbai–Pune carpool cost?

It depends on the car, the fuel price and the expressway toll. Work out fuel plus toll and divide by everyone in the car. Drivers set the per-seat price on their listing, so check current rides for the going rate.
